The Philadelphia Eagles, playing for the first time without Donovan McNabb, showed that the team has capable quarterbacks.

Kevin Kolb, the starter, was impressive, while Michael Vick, the backup, showed flashes from his former self, before Mike Kafka, the rookie, rallied the Eagles, as Philadelphia defeated the Jaguars 28-27 on Friday night in the Eagles preseason opener.

David Akers, Pro Bowl kicker, made all five five goal attempts, including one of 36 yards to give Philadelphia a lead of one point during the fourth quarter.

The online letter posted on the team website of the Jacksonville Jaguars seemed innocent. Joey, a reader from Jacksonville, complained about an announcement made recently that the team’s yearly training camp inter-squad scrimmage in August would be open only to season ticket holders for the very first time and not to the general public. Jaguars.com editor Vic Ketchman responded to the email. In his impassioned post, he asked, or maybe the right word for it is begged, Jacksonville’s community to support the team. Last season, the Jaguars only averaged 49,652 a game. All of their home dates except for one ended up blacked out for local television.

After playing conservatively all season, suddenly the 49ers were acting like riverboat gamblers. Smith said, the more comfortable that we can get, then the more confidence we have, as San Fransisco defeated Jacksonville 20-3 at Candlestick Park. Let’s throw on fourth down and short. We want it. Let’s go for it. The approach of high risk for high reward typified the new look of the 49ers versus the Jaguars. Smith, operating from the shotgun mostly, threw 41 times, which included his career high of 29 times during the first half.

Ever since he was young, Maurice Jones-Drew has been taught to keep churning his legs until he crossed over the goal line. His determined running perennially makes him of the highest scoring backs in the NFL. However, his willingness to go down on his knee right in front of Jacksonville’s end zone, helped to underscore the team first approach of the Jaguars and help to position a field goal of 21 yards from Josh Scobee that clinched the Jaguars 24-22 victory over the Jets on Sunday as time expired.
